Why Neighborhood Chaplains?

Jesus replied, "The most important commandment is this: 'Listen, O Israel! The LORD our God is the one and only LORD. And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.' The second is equally important: ' Love your neighbor as yourself.' No other commandment is greater than these." Mark 12:29-31 NLT

Our role as Neighborhood Chaplains is to help anyone who needs help because life is hard, and our job is to love. When we realize that 70% of people around us are without a pastor, a church, a place to connect spiritually, we see the need for the availability of spiritual care.

In the training manual "Community Chaplains Care Guide," the need is described in the following way:

Over the next 12 months in neighborhoods near you:

  • 28 babies will be born
  • 75 hospitalizations will occur
  • 300 people will experience a major life crisis
  • 42 divorces will occur

Over the next 12 months in workplaces near you:

  • 160 co-workers will grieve the death of a family member
  • 200 co-workers will experience a job change or job loss
  • 400 co-workers will face financial challenges
  • 68 co-workers will be impacted by suicide

Over the next 12 months in schools near you:

  • 340 students will be involved in car accidents
  • 860 students will experiment with alcohol or drugs
  • 960 students will engage in sexual activity
  • 380 students will seriously consider suicide
  • 100% will experience the ups and downs of adolescence
